APPLETON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency have begun a five-year review of the N. W. Mauthe Superfund Site at 725 S. Outagamie St. in Appleton.

The federal Superfund law requires a review at least every five years at sites where a cleanup is on-going. The DNR and EPA conduct this review to make sure the cleanup still protects people and the environment. This is the fourth such review since construction work was completed in 1996.

The Superfund site is a former metal plating property. Plating solution chemicals contaminated both soil and groundwater with chromium, cadmium, cyanide, zinc and volatile organic compounds. Due to concerns about these chemicals, EPA placed the Mauthe site on its National Priorities List in March 1989, making it eligible for cleanup under the federal Superfund program.

The DNR began an investigation into soil and groundwater in 1989 under the Superfund program and found that chromium was the predominant contaminant. Cleanup by the EPA, to remove or contain contaminated soil and groundwater, began in 1995.

The EPA excavated soil with significant chromium and installed a groundwater collection system to contain groundwater contamination. In 1996, EPA constructed an above-ground treatment system to treat the collected groundwater. The treatment system operated from 1997 to 2006. In 2006, the collected water began being discharged directly to the city of Appleton's sanitary sewer under permit. Routine monitoring of groundwater conditions is also on-going.

During this five-year review, the DNR will inspect the groundwater collection system to ensure it is operating as designed by EPA, and will study the groundwater samples collected over the past five years. The DNR and EPA will then prepare a report of its findings. The completion of the report will be announced and a copy of the report will be made available for public review.

The DNR invites interested parties to provide information that might be important in this site review. Contact Jennifer Borski, DNR hydrogeologist, by mail, phone, fax or e-mail. Her office is at 625 E. County Road Y, STE. 700, Oshkosh, WI 54901-9731; phone: 920-424-7887, fax: 920-424-4404, or e-mail: [email protected]

The information gathered will be considered during the review process if received by February 15, 2016. The five-year review report will be completed in April 2016.
