EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- Clarence "Buck" Malick, who has long been a conservation leader in the St. Croix Valley, is the Department of Natural Resources Secretary's Director Award 2015 recipient.

Malick has been an active and steadfast supporter of many DNR programs, along with supporting conservation, environmental education and mentoring youth.

"Buck truly is the pedestal that supports the umbrella of conservation partnerships in St. Croix County and surrounding communities. His work is supportive of the mission of the DNR," said Missy Sparrow, DNR Western Prairie Habitat Restoration Area biologist.

"Buck Malick is a hero to many of us and very much deserves this award," Sparrow said.

"We are grateful for his involvement with numerous organizations and for his passion for conservation, environmental leadership and willingness to partner with others to educate, inform and create community awareness about the importance of protecting prairies, wetlands, and rivers."

A member of Hudson Rod & Gun Club and the St. Croix County Alliance, Malick is a DNR certified angler instructor and has been involved with the coordination and implementation of several local fishing contests for children.

Malick's memberships, leadership and accomplishments include:

 Assisted in the development of the River Walk curriculum at Hudson's Willow River Elementary School used to educate students on the importance of protecting the St. Croix River. He also helped the school obtain a grant to put in a rain garden and now helps with maintaining the rain garden.

 Assisted in the establishment of the Western Prairie Habitat Restoration Area.

 Willow River State Park Friends group member.

 Assisted with the formation of the Friends of the St Croix Wetland Management District.

 Minnesota/Wisconsin Boundary Water Commission member.

"Buck is the go-to guy for many organizations he works with, to integrate the groups on common goals," Sparrow said.

Dan Baumann, DNR Secretary's Director for West Wisconsin, agreed.

"Buck has been a wonderful partner, mentor and leader for all things conservation in the St. Croix River Valley. He's been a tireless steward and an outstanding example of how collaboration leads to conservation. It was my honor to present Buck this award," Baumann said.
