    Jefferson County seeks Stewardship grant to expand county park

    Fort Atkinson, Wis. – Jefferson County has applied for a 50 percent matching grant from the urban greenspace subprogram of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program to assist with the purchase of 120 acres of land in the Town of Jefferson, Jefferson County. The county will provide match to the grant award.

    The property is being acquired to expand Dorothy Carnes County Park and Rose Lake State Natural Area and would be open to the public for low-impact recreational activities including fishing, hiking, cross-county skiing, biking, snowshoeing, nature appreciation and scientific study and research. Hunting and trapping would be prohibited under a Jefferson County ordinance that regulates county parks.

    Rothenmaier can be reached by phone at 608-275-3322 to answer any questions. Written comments will be accepted through Dec. 29. In accordance with s. NR 52.04 (2) (b), Wis. Adm. Code, objections about the prohibited activities on this property must show the proposed prohibition to be inconsistent with s. 23.0916 (2) (b), Stats., and s. NR 52.05, Wis. Adm. Code.
