FOR MEDIA SCHEDULING PURPOSES: Event runs from Friday, April 1- Sunday, April 3 in Rothschild, Wis.

ROTHSCHILD, Wis. - The first season of Wisconsin's Breeding Bird Atlas, the largest avian project in Wisconsin history, was truly one to crow about.

Learn which birds are coming on strong, which may be struggling and which nine species are newcomers to our state at the Breeding Bird Atlas Season 2 kickoff meeting Friday April 1 through Sunday April 3 at Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center, Rothschild. Media coverage of the event is welcome with opportunities for journalists to participate in "hotspot" birding field trips and obtain exciting first-season results from the largest avian citizen science project ever attempted in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is a co-sponsor of the Atlas project, along with other partners. The event will feature opportunities to talk with dozens of local volunteers combing fields, forests, wetlands and prairies to identify and document Wisconsin birds to help shape future conservation efforts.

    Saturday, April 2 highlights:

    • 6 a.m. - Enjoy one of four early bird field trips with local and state birding experts at area bird "hotspots." Meet in the Northwoods area of the hotel and drive to the sites; return by 9 a.m.
    • 9:30 a.m. - Introduction to Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas
    • 10 a.m. - Results from Season 1 of the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas.

    Sunday, April 3 highlights:
