Town of Rome recognized for work to protect community News Release Published: August 9, 2010 by the West Central Region Contact(s): Amy Luebke, wildland-urban interface specialist, Forestry, (715) 421-7875 Forestry officials with the state Department of Natural Resources will recognize the Town of Rome for making the community less vulnerable to wildfires. At a meeting of the Rome town board this Thursday, Aug. 12, the DNR will present the Town of Rome with a Certificate of Community Protection Achievement from Firewise, a program of the National Fire Protection Association. The Firewise communities program encourages and acknowledges forward-thinking communities that act now to become safer from wildfire. The Town of Rome adopted their Community Wildfire Protection Plan in July of 2007. Since that time, town officials have conducted hazard fuels reduction projects to reduce the risks presented by wildfires. Town officials also have undertaken outreach projects to make town residents aware of the risks and the steps they can take to better prepare their properties for wildfire. The town’s next project involves making curbside chipping available in a target area this fall.
