TOMAHAWK, Wis. -- The Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Consulting Foresters officially signed a Green Tier charter today at the Wisconsin Council on Forestry meeting in Tomahawk. This formalizes their relationship and lays the ground work for continued and enhanced environmental activities.

Wisconsin Consulting Foresters is a nonprofit professional organization that emphasizes continuing education, ethics, sound science and sustainability. Its members are independent, private sector professional foresters that provide forestry consulting services for land owners in Wisconsin. The members encourage sustainable forestry practices and are committed to improving forest resources.

"We value the Wisconsin Consulting Foresters' efforts to help others manage their forestlands in a sustainable manner," said DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp. "This charter is a great addition to the Green Tier program."

Overall the charter establishes methods and compliance commitments to improve forest management practices for consistent protection of Wisconsin's forest resources. The signing of this charter formalizes and expands the relationship between DNR and WCF. There is commitment from both parties to continue to pursue collaborative ideas that will lead to the improvement of Wisconsin's forests. Leaders have committed to regular sessions to discuss continuous improvement and identify new opportunities. In addition, WCF members commit to:

    • Exceed regulatory requirements
    • Incorporate beyond compliance actions
    • Build capacity to support sustainable forest management practices on private forestlands
    • Implement a mentoring program for forestry college students
    • Partake in additional professional training and sharing.

"WCF is very excited to expand the working relationship we have had with the Wisconsin DNR," said Don Peterson, Wisconsin Consulting Foresters president. "We believe the Green Tier Charter will not only benefit our members, but also the citizens of Wisconsin who we serve."

In 2012 DNR signed a charter with another forestry related organization, the Wisconsin Master Loggers. It focuses on improving logging practices.

Green Tier is a voluntary program administered by the DNR. Under this program DNR works with groups who conduct their business with beyond compliance efforts and continually look for ways to improve. Currently there are 88 participants with 247 facilities, and now six active charters.
